The Kannada Film Industry is known to have produced some of the greatest heroines in the history of cinema. While a few have gone ahead and showed their talent across the country, a few of them have performed exceedingly well in our industry to create a legacy of talented actresses in Sandalwood. If you take the current scenario too, happening heroines such as Rashmika Mandana, Nabha Natesh and Shraddha Srinath have all started their careers here. We also have the likes of Anushka Shetty, Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai and Pooja Hedge who are from our state.

With such a legacy of heroines behind us, it is natural that we portray them in a great way on screen. However, it is unfortunate that very few films have come in recent times which have offered a meaty character to heroines. Good quality Heroine-oriented movies are on the decline and hence, it is this aspect where Sandalwood needs to concentrate on in the coming days.

It also needs to be noted that neighbouring industries have gone ahead of us in this aspect. The likes of Samantha and Nayanathara have mesmerized us with content-oriented roles and it is time that Sandalwood follows the suit too. While producing female-oriented movies is one thing, we have to get past the trend where heroines are used only in a movie to be a part of a few handy scenes and a couple is songs. That would altogether create a healthy environment in the industry.

For this to happen, the process needs to get corrected from scratch. The scripts have to get better and make sure it does not include a female just for the sake of it. Female characters do not necessarily mean it is the heroine but also the supporting characters. We all know what an impact a character like “Sivagami in Bahubali” did.

However, it is only now that strong female characters in Sandalwood are in decline. We have many inspiring and wonderfully written female characters during the Puttana Kanagal era. We also have the talent to take such characters forward. The likes of Radhika Pandit, Shraddha Srinath and Shruthi Hariharan who pull off such roles with ease. And at the end of the day, it will only impact the overall performance of the movie in a positive way.
